CSNS Fellowship Concepts

  1. Formalize ad-hoc committee consisting of Vice Chair CSNS, Quadrant Chairs, Chair of CEC, Chair of YPC, Chair of LDC, Chair of Membership, Chair of Mentoring, and Deb Benzil (oversee med student summer fellowship program). Mission is to oversee Fellowship program.
  2. Formerly name them CSNS Socioeconomic Fellows with one year term elected by Quadrants (Three per quadrant).
  3. Develop goals and curriculum.
  4. Develop selection process: Currently NE and SW quadrants select fellows prior to the fall meeting (Fall/Spring rotation) and the NW, SE, and military select fellows prior to spring meeting (Spring/Fall rotation). This ensures 6/12 residents at any one meeting are "experienced." Problems: a. No standardized selection criteria b. No standardized expectations c. Complicated election schedule d. Restricted candidate pool e. selection needs to occur 6 months prior to first meeting.
  5. Assign to "mentor." Mentoring sub-committee to implement at quadrant level. Assignment of mentors three months prior to first meeting and communication occurs at that time along with informational packet.
  6. Develop evaluation and retainment mechanism. Outgoing fellow survey and official letter of performance (responsibility of mentor) with certificate of completion of fellowship. Retainment is then asked of Leadership development and membership ad hoc committees.
  7. Develop durable funding mechanism. Relationship with parent bodies, industry, and CSNS would allow for socioeconomic fellows funded by fellowship grants from industry or parent bodies only if one or both parent bodies are sponsoring educational organization. Currently, $2500 per fellow would be requested.
  8. Medical Student Fellowship. The CNS has offered to sponsor this including advertisement and selection. Dr. Benzil to be CSNS champion and will contact Linda Liau directly to begin selection process now for June 2008.
